Kano Orders Hospitals, PHCs to Establish Neonatal Corners to Reduce Infant Deaths
The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, has directed all hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centres across the state to establish neonatal corners as part of efforts to reduce the high rate of neonatal mortality in Kano State.
Yusif explained Neonatal corners as a special designated sections within hospitals and PHCs equipped to provide immediate care, monitoring, and emergency treatment for newborn babies, especially those facing complications after birth.
Dr. Labaran stated this in an interview with our correspondent at Nasarawa Hospital on Thursday
The commissioner also announced the establishment of Special Baby Care Units in six general hospitals located across six Local Government Areas of the state to provide specialized treatment and care for newborn babies facing health complications after delivery.
He said the initiative became necessary due to delays often experienced in providing adequate healthcare services to both mothers and newborns during childbirth, noting that healthcare workers sometimes focus more attention on mothers while babies receive less immediate care.
According to him, the neonatal corners and special baby care units will ensure that both mothers and babies receive proper medical attention simultaneously, especially during critical periods immediately after delivery.
He explained that the units would be fully equipped with facilities and essential medical equipment needed for monitoring, checking, and treating newborn babies, particularly premature babies and infants with emergency health conditions.
The commissioner said the government is committed to strengthening maternal and child healthcare services across the state in order to reduce preventable deaths among women and newborns.
He further assured residents that the administration is determined to make Kano State one of the leading states in healthcare delivery in Nigeria through improved hospital services, trained health personnel, and better medical infrastructure.
Dr. Labaran emphasized that reducing maternal and neonatal mortality remains a major priority of the Kano State Government, adding that more interventions would continue to be introduced to safeguard the lives of women and children.
